Halloween is nearly here, bringing spooky decorations, visiting ghouls and a perfectly good excuse for a ghostly cat picture.
Of course, our cats already specialise in mysterious nighttime noises, staring at things we can’t see and suddenly appearing out of nowhere. No costume required!
Here are a few ways to keep the evening comfortable for your own little household haunt.
👻 Let cats be cats
Most cats would rather skip the fancy dress. Only try a costume if your cat is comfortable with it, keep it lightweight and well fitted, and supervise throughout. Their eyes, ears and nose should stay uncovered, with nothing restricting movement or breathing. Remove it immediately if they seem unhappy. A Halloween photo edit is a lovely alternative!
🍬 Keep the lolly stash tucked away
Keep all chocolate, lollies, chewing gum and wrappers out of reach. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, while xylitol in some sugar-free treats is especially dangerous for dogs. Fake cobwebs, dangling wires and open flames also belong well away from curious paws.
🏠 Make it an indoor evening
Bring your cats inside before the festivities begin. Whatever their colour, a familiar home is a much nicer place to be than amongst unexpected visitors and startling neighbourhood noises.
🐾 Give them a quiet retreat
Set up a secure, cosy room away from the front door, with fresh water, a litter tray, comfortable bedding and somewhere to hide. It helps keep them settled—and prevents a door-dashing escape when the trick-or-treaters arrive.
If your pet eats something potentially harmful, contact your vet promptly.
A little stalking, a little pouncing…
For cats who prefer chasing things to dressing up, a short session of supervised play with their favourite toy can be their own Halloween treat. Put teaser toys safely away afterwards, then let the evening’s serious snoozing begin.
